Oakland Police responding to a report of shots fired at 4am Friday morning found transgender woman Nikai David, 33, on Castro Street suffering from a gunshot wound.

She died at the scene.

"Nikai was really sweet. She was a happy, fun person,"

Ashlee Banks told KTVU that she is saddened that Nikai David of Hayward, a friend she considered to be a sister, was shot and killed.

"I was really devastated when I found out, when I got the news," said Banks.

Police said at this point there is no evidence of a hate crime and do not have a suspect in custody.
