Catherine Hyde's Daughter Still Living without Public Accommodations Protections
Catherine Hyde was duped by Equality Maryland into testifying for HB 235 encouraging legislators to pass the flawed legislation framed as a 'non discrimination' bill tragically stripped of public accommodations provisions.
I hope she and her daughter will listen to the energized transgender voice emerging from the inner city of Baltimore. These are voices of transgender people who because of there circumstances, un- and underemployed use public transportation even sometimes public restrooms because nothing else is available.
Catherine these people are the ones who have gone where your high school daughter has yet to venture X10. Listen to their voices.

HB235 Killed in the Eleventh Hour! WE WON!
To thank try and individualy the trans people in Maryland who accomplished this I would have to leave someone out and that would be sad so I will just say JOB WELL DONE! We took down Goliath.
Some of the blogs that directly empowered this effort taking on the seemingly overwhelming media power of HRC's media platform: Monica who sounded the alarm on TransGriot , Kat at Enda Blog, Ashley on her blog Trans Forming Media (TFM), USA, The Transexual Menace, Woman Born Trannsexual, She Wired, Know the Neighbor, TransAdovcate.
Twitter advocates who's passion drove the tweet world informing and educating about this terriable bill, Angel Dallare, metalmujer voz latina, ernesto olivo, whatsername, D Ruth Bavousett, Desiree Arceneaux Also belonging in our Hall of Fame is Maryland Senator Madaleno who is pre filling a anti discrimination bill for the 2012 that includes public accommodations.
Unfortunately when there is a epic battle between the underdog tweeter and bloggers fighting for equality there is a villain. In this case its Equality Maryland. After Equality Maryland's role in HB235 was exposed they panicked and sought to hide, deceive, lie, pressure, intimidate, and mislead. Instead the truth is being laid bare here, and everywhere freedom of speech is honored.
Also belong in this hall of shame is the lone national blogger who paroted Equality Marylands lies and deceptions, Autumn Sandeen at Pams House Blend. Autumn, I would be PROUD to be placed next to Ashlely Love in your sidebare of intimidation. Trans people only ask for what ALL other minorities demand, FULL EQUALITY. Nothing less is acceptable.

Equality Maryland Morgan Meneses Sheets "welcomes criticism" Oh no, you didn't say that!
First lets take a trip with Metro Weekly into revisionist gay fantasyland which paints Morgan Meneses Sheets as a champion of transgender people who welcomes criticism.
I have documented the campaign of censorship led by Morgan Meneses Sheets. !Please sign the petition against HB235
On February eighth a Baltimore transgender woman journalist Danna LaRocca was banned from Equality Maryland's facebook page for questioning Equality Maryland's obvious lack of racial diversity.
Why does Equality Maryland not mention the racial minority transgender group Trans-United anymore since Sandy Rawls withdrew her support? Why does Equality Maryland blog not have any entries from Maryland advocate groups?
Numerous other transgender and cisgender advocates myself included are banned from commenting on the Equality Maryland facebook page. There are dozens of documented instances when rational respectful comments have been deleted by Equality Maryland.
Equality Maryland's note FAQ – Censorship, HB 235 and the EQMD Facebook page. stated that the censoring of opposition to HB235 on their facebook page was done because there were physical threats of violence made against her, the Equality Maryland Staff and the lead sponsor of HB235 Del. Pena-Melnyk.
That note which written in defence of EQMD's censorship was quickly disputed by those of who were not banned. Those who did comment had some of there comments deleted including the past president of the EQMD board.
!Please sign the petition against HB235
In fact Del. Pena-Melnyk has endeavoured to silence her critics by calling the Executive Director of TransMaryland, myself and others screaming threats that if "you people" show up at hearings she would pull all support for transgender people!
Equality Maryland held one unannounced 'transgender meeting' with its staff to get input from the Baltimore community. The next transgender meeting was attended by a local transgender advocate Robyn Webb who was shouted down by the Equality Maryland staff and gender queer shills.
Transmaryland held a protest after that meeting and the next day Equality Maryland cancelled all further meetings until the end of the legislative sessions with the transgender community claiming “scheduling conflicts” as the reason.
Sheets is to far into this lie to have any hope for redemption so in desperation fearing the inevitable membership upheaval she makes preemptive strikes hoping to cover her lies with so much regurgitated vomit most courageous journalistic crusaders would be repulsed by the stench alone. Not me Sheets.

Equality Maryland "Takes the Gloves off" to Bare knuckle fight Maryland Transgender
Equality Maryland is promoting a bullying tactic tyrants always resort to when all other means of intimidation Fail. They ether threaten to or do beat up their opponent.
Recent EQMD tweets suggesting violence against Maryland Transgender people and one slanderous retweet disparaging Maryland Sen. Frosh.
I find this extremely offensive and I am calling them out for this tactic. Of all the 'civil rights' groups Equality Maryland should know that words do kill.

Maryland Senate: NO Trans-Crow Law! NO Slavery!
The Maryland Judicial Proceedings Committee is now considering a "transgender anti discrimination" bill stripped of public accommodations provisions. What does that mean to you and I, the average trans person? It means you would be allowed workplace protections but none for public accommodations.
You may soon be existing in a society much the as it was during the Jim Crow era. Transgender people could work at but would be subject to arrest just for being in or using a"Place of public accommodation" which is defined as an inn, hotel, motel, restaurant, cafeteria, lunchroom, lunch counter, soda fountain,a motion picture house, theater, concert hall, sports arena, stadium, or other place of exhibition or entertainment.
The majority trans peoples income is lower than 18,000 which indicates most of us work in public service jobs, with public accommodations the only option.
Or fired by your employer for not following the enhanced dress code. Or thrown out of emergency shelters if you demand to be housed with the gender congruent with your expression. HRC is calling on its entire membership to enslave transgender people. HB235 would make you a second class citizen living at the whim of the ruling class.... In other words, a slave.
Regardless of where you live this bill is a threat to you because it is being pushed by HRC.
Every Maryland transgender group opposes this bill, but our voices have been censored so the Senators will never know how much we were against this legislation, unless you act. Equality Maryland as it has all but banned dissension from its Facebook page while simultaneously lording over us their victory in Maryland's House.
The Washington Blade, like most gay publishers deletes most dissenting opinions to its articles pimping Equality Maryland's dis empowerment and assimilation of transgender people.
We must take action now. The Senate hearing could take place as early as Wednesday the 30th.
Please call these Senators and tell them No to Trans-Crow. No to HB235.

HR235 Vote March 24th on the Maryland Transgender 'equality' bill without equality
HR235 has just been voted out of the subcommitte Friday the 25th March 2011. It needs to crossover into the Senate by March 28 (no sessions this weekend which mean a vote on Monday the 28th.) Then go to the Judicial Proceedings Committee for a vote and to the floor of the Senate for a floor vote by the April 11th.
It is also reported that there are some amendments to the bill not yet annotated on the bills official page. It is presumed these changes are going to be added to appease legislators not yet committed and not the Maryland transgender community represented by Transmaryland and Trans-United or local journalists who have voiced loud objections to the removal of public accommodations provisions
Dana LaRocca, a Maryland transgender woman sums it up nicely;
"HB235’s omission of public accommodations is a flaw that will not easily be remedied in the future. All previous anti discrimination bills have included public accommodations protections and that omission in this bill will in the future be seen as a legislative intent to create a second class of citizenship for transgender Marylanders. I understand that it is considered an easier bill to win in its current form. The transgender community is not interested in an easy win. We are interested in justice. By denying equal access to public accommodations HB235 denies the dignity of an entire class of persons."
"Out of respect for the dignity of human persons HB235 must be rejected and we must not consider such legislation until such time that it includes the same protections for transgender persons as the law does for all other classes of citizens. We are all entitled to the same goods inherent in social practice. That is what social justice means."
On behalf of the half dozen Maryland transgender activists who HRC is throwing it multi million dollar corporate might against I ask the people who are entrusted with our freedom please do not pass HB235.
This is so very wrong.

ACLU of Maryland accessory to EQMD oppression of Transgender Community
My tweet:
@ACLU_MD supports #eqMD horrific #HB235 despite MD transgender groups opposition http://goo.gl/GKJCy and experience http://wp.me/plmvK-gu
My Facebook post:
ACLU of Maryland responds "Please contact our legislative team with your concerns: curtis@aclu-md.org"
I will Contact Curtis and ask him why the ACLU of Maryland is supporting EQMD despite their self admitted censorship of transgender objections to HB 235. This action by The ACLU of Maryland is contrary to their opinion on freedom of speech.
Statement to House subcommittee, May 2010
I will ask Curtis why the ACLU of Maryland is supporting a bill that the a minority clearly opposes. NOT being the oppressed ACLU of Maryland is not in a position ton dictate to transgender people what their concerns are.
The first paragraphs of the ACLU testimony at the House hearing.
"The ACLU of Maryland strongly supports HB 235 as providing long overdue protection toNO it OPENS a 'loop hole'.
Maryland’s transgendered residents. It should receive a favorable report from this committee."
"The state’s current antidiscrimination law prohibits discrimination based upon race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, genetic information, or disability, but provides no protection for transgendered individuals, leaving them vulnerable to discrimination in all areas of civic life. The bill closes this loophole."
What HB235 does is places the onus on future legislative efforts to show exactly why transgender people should be treated as equal in societies public accommodations when they were clearly denied that right under previous legislation. This legislation is not better than than nothing it is worst than nothing.
EQMD tries to justify HB235 by suggesting the near future social climate in Maryland will be more conducive to passing public accommodations amendment. EQMD crafted the previous exclusionary amendment a decade ago. Why would we believe they would ever come back' for us now that the Marriage issues remains unsolved. This self serving lie only condemns generations of transgender people to generations of servitude and second class citizenship.
The last ditch defense offered by eqMD of this fail is debunked because HB235 does not protect transgender people in homeless shelters
ACLU, get out of bed with equality Maryland. Maryland Transgender people DO NOT want HB235!

Barney Frank ENDA AGAIN Anytime now: Better be with Public Accommodations
Barney Frank AKA the "men with penises in the women's shower" congressman has just announced that the 2011 version of ENDA is about to be "reintroduced" in Congress "at any time now". This means the current version has already been written and he is gathering co-sponsors now.
I sincerely hope the Congress of the United States does not try to pull the stunt that Equality Maryland is doing by backing a transgender "anti Discrimination" bill without public accommodations provisions.
I hope that Mr. Barney Frank and his political backer HRC have taken heed of the outrage in Maryland and across this country. We will know "anytime now".
Some comments reflect a ignorance or a wish to revise transgender history. Lets set something straight now. The 2010 ENDA failed because of public accommodations Despite assurances from NCTE Barney Frank says there will be Gender police.

Equality Maryland slams door SHUT on Transexuals after HB235 Protest
Transmaryland hosts DC protest of HB235 with participants of NCTE lobby day as reported by She Wired and Trans Forming Media
In response to the protest equality Maryland shut down the transgender Baltimore "working groups" until after the legislative session ends. This unprecedented act of censorship by any federation member was preceded by equality Maryland banning members and deleting opposing messages on its facebook page. These two combined actions effectively eliminates all voices but those who fully support HB235 without public accommodations and the failed marriage bill strategy.
Prior to this announcement there have been two "meetings" held by eqMD about HB235. One was unannounced and the second one any and all transgender opponents of HB235 were shouted down by eqMD staffers.
These two sham meetings are what equality Maryland has touted as its source of input from the greater transgender community They are to be discontinued according to a message received by a participant of the preceding 'Gender Identity work group meetings'.
The message from equality Maryland:
Due to scheduling conflicts, the transgender issues working group meeting originally scheduled for tonight has been postponed.
Thank you for coming out to Baltimore these past few weeks, lending your time and your voices to the ...discussion.
We believe these meetings have been constructive. We are committed to continuing these conversations after the legislative session so we can best formulate a coordinated, long range educational and legislative agenda.
We look forward to continuing this important dialogue. The next meeting will be scheduled for Wednesday, April 13th at 7:30 PM in the Equality Maryland offices. At that time we hope to have a system in place that will allow folks to join via a conference call. We'll keep you posted as the date draws closer.
(emphasis added by kelli Anne Busey)
We are of course aware that some members of the group disagree with the strategy behind HB 235. For those who are interested in supporting this legislation, please consider getting in contact with our deputy field director, Aimee Martin at aimee@equalitymaryland.org.(all others, fuck off and die)
We're committed towinningbulldozing overthese vital protections forthe transgender community now, and hope you'll join us.<
We look forward to seeing you on April 13th. (after the legislative session ends)
Sincerely,
Morgan Meneses-sheets
Executive Director
(L-R) Trans Maryland's Media Director Jenna Fischetti, IFGE's ED Denise Leclaire, Trans Maryland organizer Donna Plamodom all atttend Trans Maryland's education rally last night at The Supreme Court, opposing HB235's tainted version
Equally troubling is the revelations that equality Maryland did not make the decision to pull the marriage bill before the Vote. Apparently out of state interests manipulated that decision.
.
Most troubling to transgender people is HRC's control of the issue.
We are fully aware that HRC would like nothing more than to get ENDA enacted and be rid of the transgender menace. The hold up on ENDA is of course public accommodations! HB235 sets a extremely alarming precedent by eliminating public accommodations as a component of states civil rights and could be used as a example in national bills.
Undoubtedly HRC and its sock puppet NCTE would love that.

Equality Maryland Silences past Board President and accuses Advocates of Threatening Legislators
Equality Maryland accuses transgender and equality advocate allies of making threatening calls to their staff and making threats of physical violence against delegates to the Maryland House of representatives!
Equality Maryland alleges that:
These self destructive blanket accusations were made by EQMD to justify its censoring of dissension by deleting comments and banning former members. These unsubstantiated accusation are libellous and sure to disenfranchise even more of its membership who have become increasingly aware of EQMD's oppression.
The FAQ – Censorship, HB 235 and the EQMD Facebook page makes accusations that threats were made not only by marriage advocates who questioned their controversial strategy but transgender people who object to HB235.
Equality Maryland claims it began its censorship after the marriage "vote was taken". This is untrue. Equality Maryland began its censorship of the entire LGBT community on February eighth after Baltimore journalist Danna LaRocca questioned Equality Maryland not about HB235, but its commitment to racial diversity.
Equality advocate David Toth, former Board President of Equality Maryland from Oct 2004 to Jan 2011 is now being censored as well.
The below comment by David Toth on the EQMD note was copied by a friend prior to it being deleted by Equality Maryland........
David B Toth: I have to agree somewhat with T.A. The community would like answers as to why EqMD along with the LGBT caucus and national partnes made this decission. What makes sending it back to committee so "right." There are so many people who put ...alot of effort in volunteering, and than those of us who have put money and time in other ways (even if not seen by all the staff), do you think that they deserved to have the House take a vote, even if it would not pass, to see where the Delegates stand on the issue. Either way the bill was going to die and have to be reintroduced next year."In this screenshot Mike Toth comment's about the above deleted comment to a person who's was already censored!
Once again unsubstantiated allegations of violence made against Equality Maryland. This time the deleted comments were supposedly made against Morgan Meneses-Sheets, Executive Director.
IT IS TIME FOR THIS TO STOP!!!!
Equality Maryland you are also invited to attend the March rally against HB235 organized by Maryland residents of Transmaryland attended and supported by our national community.
Indeed this is just one more effort by eqMD to quash the will of the transgender people but this time they have stepped too far over the line.
If Equality Maryland could prove these accusations of threatened violence, the LGBT people would ostracize the offenders, never to return to our community and I as a member of EQMD would stand by Morgan Meneses-Sheets in doing so!
But in absence of that.......
Many marriage equality advocates like myself now agree Morgan Meneses-Sheets must resign. Freedom of speech, marriage equality, our very civil rights movement is under attack. Marriage equality and transgender civil rights are suffering.
Morgan Meneses-Sheets must resign.

Donna Simone Plamondon Maryland Transgender Woman's HB235 Testimony
Donna Simone Plamondon
Public Hearing on the Gender Identity Anti-Discrimination Bill
HB235
Annapolis, Maryland
March 9, 2011
I and many other members of Maryland’s transexual and intersex communities feel slighted and offended by the omission of public accommodations to HB235. We respect the efforts of our allies, our legislators, Equality Maryland, the NGLTF, the NCTE and transgender community, however, the omission of public accommodations shows a lack of understanding of what transexual and intersex means.
TRANSEXUALS and INTERSEX persons always IDENTIFY with the sex opposite their sex assigned at birth and EXPRESS that IDENTITY in a consistent manner every day of their lives. TRANSEXUALS and INTERSEX persons have undergone (or are undergoing) counseling and medical therapies under the supervision of therapists and medical professionals according to the International Standards of Care as recommended by World Professional Association for Transgender Health
.
TRANSEXUALS and INTERSEX people are recognized as having a medical condition by both the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association as evidenced by their individual resolutions supporting the legal recognition of their IDENTIFIED and EXPRESSED gender. After significant progress in therapy even the Federal Government recognizes the need for gender marker changes on passports and identification. Even the government of IRAN recognizes transexuality as a medical condition and covered by their national health care – and has for over 30 years.
TRANSEXUALS and INTERSEX people have been referred to, both biblically and in history, as members of society under the term “EUNUCH”. (In the words of Jesus Christ himself) - "For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it". (Matthew 19:12)
TRANSEXUALS and INTERSEX persons should be protected by a public accommodation amendment and recognized as to have taken the responsible approach of seeking help from psychiatric and medical professionals to resolve a medical condition. We deserve all the dignity, respect and protections, both civil and legal, to which all citizens are entitled under the laws of the State of Maryland, Title VII of the Civil Rights act of 1964 and the United States of America.
Thank You for Your Attention.
Donna S. Plamondon

Just a note. You will here it repeated by the proponents of HB235 that other counties, cities and states have "enacted laws identical to HB235". That is a lie. HB235 has been stripped of the ALL IMPORTANT PUBLIC ACCOMMIDATIONS PROVISIONS.
No county, city or state government has enacted a law like this. That is why Maryland transgender people are so upset with this bill.

Sandy Rawls: Being Transgender in Maryland (via Maryland Morning with Sheilah Kast)
Sandy Rawls, leader of Trans-United speaks to Sheilah Kast of 88.1FM NPR on 3.11.2011 about what it is like to be transgender in Maryland today.
The hot topic is the pending bill HB235.
Which is opposed as written by Sandy's group, Trans-United, and the other transgender group, Transmaryland, Maryland Senator Rich Madaleno, University of Maryland students, nearby LGBT equality organizations, local transgender journalists, advocates and a national bloggers......
.....not directly linked to Equality Maryland, the sole proponent.
The reason for the transgender community's opposition to HB235 a bill purported to protect us?
This bill does not include transgender people in protection as a minority under § 20-301. 2010 Maryland Code Discrimination in Places of Public Accommodation
The lack of this key provision may be contributed to the delegates ignorance as Sandy points while speaking in general terms of her experience lobbying in Annapolis.
Sandy explains: "I talked to three delegates in Annapolis and all three indicated they may change their position on voting for gender anti discrimination bills but they told me I don't know what I'm voting for so the key here is education"
Education is indeed needed Sandy. We must stop this dangerous bill from becoming law and having a long term disastrous effect on the transgender community.

Maryland Students Today and 55 years ago: Still fighting for Public Accommodations
Fifty five years ago then a college student Dr. Helena Hicks, pictured right, participated in the first ever lunch counter sit in at Reeds, a Maryland department store, protesting black peoples denial of equal access to public accommodations.
Transgender people are still fighting for that same right today. Incredibly, the foe promoting our second class citizenship is "Equality Maryland" a federation member!
On this podcast of The Marc Steiner Show Hicks talks about why Maryland students 55 years ago committed this civil disobedience and why the preservation of this memory is so important.
Hicks recalls “We could go in Read’s and buy a pack of cigarettes or a pack of gum, but you’re hungry and you can’t sit down. It might be cold, it might be raining, it might be snowing and you can’t sit down and drink a hot cup of coffee or cocoa or tea or anything,”
As we all know these courageous acts of defiance ignited the conscious of people of good faith of all colors and eventually resulted in the civil rights act of 1964
Helena Hicks wants to keep developers from tearing down the building that Reeds was housed in so to preserve our memory of this struggle that allowed almost every minority to live as first class citizens.
Today Maryland students are still engaged in the battle for public accommodations. They are asking their state legislators to remember the lessons learned decades ago with blood:
"The 'Gender Expression Non-discrimination Act' bill being introduced into the Maryland house of delegates this session has a serious issue. An issue so big that, if passed, could put full trans equality in the state out of reach for *years*."Lessons forgotten! Has Morgan Meneses-Sheets forgotten the value of human dignity?
"The bill lacks public accommodations protections while providing housing, employment, and credit protections. What this means in practical terms is that trans people can still get thrown out of restaurants, domestic violence shelters, forced off of buses, really most anything."
"Imagine the civil rights act of 1964 without protections in restaurants, bathrooms, buses, etc."
"And if the bill DOES pass without public accommodations, then that protection will be nearly impossible to get because any attempt to bring it to the floor will be met with 'Bathroom bill' and basically get laughed out of committee."
In a recent conversation with Morgan Meneses-Sheets, Executive Director of Equality Maryland
she incredulously harrumphed when I asked her what reality would be like now if public accommodations had not been included in the civil rights acts.
Yet amazingly she is persisting in promoting Maryland HB235 a transgender "equality" bill without public accommodations.
HB235 is resurrecting the concept of humanity that those who voted against that legislation in 1964 believed in. They believed that people of color, as transphobes do today, could work for them and support their business but that they could not share in their public spaces.
Maryland students understand, why can't Morgan Meneses-Sheets?

Equality Maryland: Deceit and Censorship = Transgender Rights
In the capture below Elizabeth questions EQMD why there are no google returns other than EQMD press releases about HB235.
I posted the following comment on February 21 at 7:56am ET
By 8:56am on February 21, 2011 my comment was deleted.
Methodist Marylanders and others of faith, I ask you to confront EQMD and demand she let transgender people have fair and equal access to the Facebook page. Please ask them what is more important, the EQMD's marriage agenda or the lives and well being of the transgender Marylanders they are stomping on?

Trans-United Joins TransMaryland opposing Maryland "Bathroom-Less" bill HB235
Maryland Section 20-301 - "Place of public accommodation" defined.
Sandy Rawls the director of Trans-United announced on her facebook profile that her group has withdrawn its support of Equality Maryland's transgender 'equality' bill minus public accommodations.
Trans-United withdraws support from Trans-United for HB235
Morgan Meneses-Sheets executive director of Equality Maryland which was instrumental in getting HB235 written without public accommodations quickly commented on Trans-United withdrawal of support.
Being that Equality Marryland has invested extraordinary resources in promoting and representing HB235 as a trans supported effort I assume Meneses-Sheets was somehow hoping to
Whats more, these are strange words coming from someones who's group EQMD blocks Marylanders if they should question their commitment to racial diversity as happened on February 8th to Transgender journalist Danna LaRocca!
Equality Maryland contention that it pursues a goodwill transgender inclusive agenda is a lie.
Former transgender Equality Maryland board member Laura Hart who quit with Dana Beyer in protest of gay peoples non support of transgender issues had this to say when questioned why she left:
"I quit the board mainly because, with my 2 years of volunteering on the United ENDA Coalition, I was totally disgusted that ENDA was left to die while DADT repeal consumed all available political capital the gay community had. I simply do not believe in an LGBT movement. There is a gay movement and a trans movement. You could say that the gay movement is our best allie and I said that is very sadly true. The gay movement has always sold us out and always will. I think the only reason they want the T to be included is to control the message to further their own ends."As to Equality Maryland contention all transgender people made well informed desisions regarding their initial support of HB234 Laura says:
"There was a statement I read early on in this controversy which stated that the trans community was consulted and agreed to dropping public accommodations. I was on that phonecon and I can tell you they took the phonecon out of context. The call took place within days of the end of the legislative session in 2009. We were told that if we did not remove public accommodations, the bill was dead. If we did, we had a fighting but only outside chance of getting it to move. We were told that if it died in 2009 then 2010 will be an election year, 2011 will be all about marriage equality and they would not come back for GI anti-discrimination until 2012, 2013, maybe even 2015. In the hope of getting something done in 2009, we agreed. I doubt the decision would be the same if we had any idea that accepting this, under short term duress, would result in a permanent ceiling on what we would ever fight to enact."And what does the future hold if these misconceptions were held as truth? Luara explains:
So what compromises are we going have forced on us this year and will the result of these compromises result in a bill being passed? If I was a betting person I would be willing to bet that GI anti-discrimination has already been sold out in the Maryland State Senate for the sake of marriage equality. To the best of my knowledge, there isn't even a Senate bill yet. It will be New Hampshire 2.0. Even before session began, there was word that the marriage bill would not be filibustered. What was given up to get that deal?Trans-United now joins with TransMaryLand in non support of this bill.
Transgender Marylanders are becoming aware of this potential tragedy and are speaking up. We NOT ONE STATE will not accept a bill that allows us legal protections in the work place but not public accommodations. This bill was in effect telling us we can work for you, but we can't use your bathroom.
Equality Maryland now stands alone to meet the public outrage without any Maryland transgender groups support for HB235 as written.

Incremental Human rights then and now a Broken Promise to broken dreams
She will not be convinced Maryland's HB235 without public accommodations provisions is a bad thing. She stated that transgender people can gain equality incrementally comparing our need to use facilities of human necessity to the incremental want to move from civil unions to full marriage equality.
Published today a article by Dana LaRocca at Baltimore OUTLoud that puts things into perspective.
Written by Dana LaRocca
"Gloria Richardson’s role in the struggle for black equality is a story of conscience. In the 1960’s white liberals and self-proclaimed leaders crafted a bill leaving her county, Dorchester, exempt from laws banning discrimination in public places. Gloria Richardson organized an adult run affiliate of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee; the Cambridge Nonviolent Action Committee (CNAC).
At stake was a referendum that if passed would have ended discrimination in public accommodations in Cambridge, Maryland. Ms. Richardson and CNAC agreed that such discrimination was wrong; what they did not concede was the right of a handful of liberals and youth activists to put their civil rights up for auction. In a counterintuitive move she went door to door telling her neighbors and friends not to vote.
The referendum failed. The Cambridge riots took their place in that grand stratagem known as the civil rights movement.
In 1961 Ambassador Adam Malick Sow of the Republic of Chad was denied service at a restaurant as he traveled through Maryland to meet President Kennedy. Nine incidents involving African diplomats had recently embarrassed Maryland and angered the international community. Compromise in the General Assembly left eleven counties untouched by public accommodations legislation.
Black citizens were not consulted in making the back room deal. Some black incrementalists, as they were called then, were pushed in front of the camera in a sixties version of spin control.

Personally I believe that there are many parallels to be drawn most importantly is that political expediency motivates incrementalism. This was the case in Cambridge forty years ago and is the driving force behind EQMD support of HB235 now.

TransMaryland advocates for amending trans exclusionary HB235
From TransMaryLands Event "Contact your legislator":
Right now in Maryland the rights of 1.5 million Marylanders in Baltimore City and Montgomery County are assured. 3X that amount are NOT protected.
Baltimore City and Montgomery County has legal protections for their transgender citizens. The rest of the state's transgender population deserves the same level of dignity and respect afforded to ALL of our citizens. They are denied the basic rights others carry, simply because they ...were born with a gender incongruent to their physical self.
HB 235, introduced last month does NOT provide full protection under the law!
MD HB235 at introduction.
Please contact your Legislators TODAY! and tell them you DEMAND a Gender Identity Anti-discrimination Act with protects Transgender Marylanders are the SAME level as Race, Color, Religion, Sex, Age, Disability, Marital Status, Sexual Orientation, or National Origin. The current bill DOES NOT provide this!

Hello[YOUR LEGISLATOR'S NAME],
My name is [YOUR FULL NAME] and I live in your district at [ENTER YOUR ADDRESS].
I am writing to urge you to vote for A Gender Identity Anti-Discrimination Act which protects Transgender Marylanders are the SAME level as Race, Color, Religion, Sex, Age, Disability, Marital Status, Sexual Orientation, or National Origin by INCLUDING PUBLIC ACCOMMODATIONS. This bill is important to me because I believe that ALL Marylanders deserve protections and respect, regardless of their gender identity.
Only by passing FULLY protective GIADA can Maryland truly be called the Free State, where everyone is treated equally.
Thank you!
Only through FULL protections can our rights be upheld!!
This bill will establish transgender Marylanders as second class citizens, subject to only partial protections and send a message National, that the same unequal treatment is acceptable.
It is through your simple phone calls and emails that YOUR voice can be heard. It is the most sacred and intimate responsibility of freedom we possess.

Take Action! EQMD Now using Full Might to Push Transgender IN=EQUALITY
Morgan Meneses-Sheets Executive director of Equality Maryland has made it clear this morning. Equality Maryland despite the objections of the transgender community will press forward of HB235.
Morgan Meneses-Sheets sheets said about the prospects of obtaining civil unions this legislative year Gay life "It’s marriage or bust. We are not going to accept anything less.”
Apparently Martin Luther King JR's words only apply to Gay marriage equality. Morgan Meneses-Sheets is using the entire weight of Equality Marryland in calling and emailing the legislature supporting HB235 which does not include public accommodations.
The panel will ecasted live tonite 7 EST/6 CST.
You can post a question to Morgan Meneses-Sheets sheets here.
(posted to the eQuality website 1/20/2011 10:57am ET)
My question goes to Morgan Meneses-Sheets sheets,
Why has Equality Maryland banned Danna LaRoccaa a well spoken transgender journalist from your facebook page. Why has Equality Maryland has continually removed links and comments from transgender people who oppose HB235 as written without public accommodations.
Equality Maryland is censoring the transgender community and attempting to force this bill on transgender people by using the full membership of Equality Maryland to lobby the legislature for HB235.
It is common sense that a bill framed as a "equality" bill without public accommodations is useless. The transgender community is asking you to stop censoring the conversation and let free speech be the bell weather of full transgender equality.
What will it take for you to let this bill die? The transgender community does not want it.
