Federal Judge sides with Roller Rebels and against Nassau County Ban on Trans Athletes

Nassau County has lost its bid to block the state from taking legal action against its ban on women’s and girls' teams that include female transgender players, the AP reports.

The women of the Long Island Roller Rebels league took issue with the ban and sued the county to lift the ban. That's when Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman brought the case to District Court in an attempt to leave the ban in place.

U.S. District Court Judge Nusrat Choudhury dismissed Nassau County’s lawsuit seeking to prevent attorney general, Letitia James from taking legal action against the county for its ban, which James has said is “transphobic” and violates the state’s anti-discrimination laws.

“This decision is a tremendous victory for justice and the rule of law, but our work here is not done,” James’ office said in an emailed statement Friday. “It’s past time for Nassau County to rescind this order and treat all our communities with the basic respect and dignity they deserve.”

The office declined to say when or if it will sue to block the ban, saying it will review the decision, which was handed down in federal court in Central Islip.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who issued the ban, vowed to appeal. “We vehemently disagree with the decision,” he said in an emailed statement.

Abbott then segways as an example to the recent bullying of a teacher in north Texas. Rachmad Tjachyadi was suspended and eventually resigned after being targeted by anti-LGBTQI influencer Chaya Raichik. She posted a continuous loop of Tjachyadi wearing a red dress on Spirit Day which has over 5 million views on X.

Opinion: Abbott this isn't "your state" to rule by decree. He was speaking for himself, as proof, to wit, a petition to reinstate this beloved teacher presently has over 20,000 signatures.

In the recording, Abbott repeatedly said that he did not know if Rachmad Tjachyadi is transgender or nonbinary or if Tjachyadi talked about those topics in the classroom.  He indicated in that recording he just hates everyone who is, or anyone he suspects is, and he will "end that behavior."

The firing of Rachmad Tjachyadi violates the new Title 9 rules just announced by the Biden administration. The new rules explicitly protect LGBTQI people for the first time and will go into effect in August 2024.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2020 that Civil Rights Law Protects Gay and Transgender Workers, as reported by the NY Times. The court said the language of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sex discrimination, applies to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
